Drug and Substance Abuse

Drug and substance abuse covers the dependency of any chemical or intoxicating substance from marijuana, cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs, tobacco and alcohol.  Some are perfectly legal to use given the right age.  However, substance abuse can affect not only the person using but others around him or her.

For instance, tobacco use is legal but even people who do not smoke can suffer from second hand smoke and the mood swings of someone in need of a cigarette.  Smoking a pack or two of cigarettes a day can be expensive as they are any where from three to seven dollars a pack depending on the brand and even higher in some areas.  That can quickly add up.  If you do smoke, you may not be aware of how your mood affects those around you who don’t.  There seem to be two sides of the fence when it comes to smoking as people get upset about the ban on it in a lot of public places.

Alcohol also has more victims than just the consumer.  If a person chooses to drink and get behind the wheel of a car, everyone who passes him on the road is potentially at risk of being involved in an accident with an intoxicated driver.  Mood swings also affect those who drink and by association, those around him.

Too many children have grown up with alcoholics and drug abusers in the family.  This has led to substance abuse problems of their own.  There are support groups, not only for those who are addicted to drugs or alcohol, but for their families as well.  This is because those who have not gone through a situation where a substance abuse problem exists at home, may not fully comprehend or understand it the way others who have had similar experiences do.

Once a drug or substance abuse problem has been identified and admitted to, which may takes an intervention, then the person is more open to seeking treatment.  An intake counselor can help a person and his or her family decide upon the best course of action for treatment.  First, the counselor ascertains whether there is a medicinal route needed because in some cases it is. If motivation is needed, drug addiction stories are proven to help a drug addict get motivated to seek rehab.
